Year 12

Outdoor Education in year 12

OE in year twelve at Golden Bay high school is about experiencing all that nature and New Zealand has to offer. We are privileged in this region with amazing opportunities on our doorstep. Whether it be climbing the karst limestone at Paynes ford, kayaking the local Takaka river, sea kayaking Abel Tasman national park, or tramping through the native bush in Kaurangi national park, all options are available.

It is my aim to progress students to be the best performers they can in risk management, environmental studies, and physical based pursuits. Students will not only develop their physical skills, but their environmental awareness, knowledge of the outdoors, and interpersonal skills.

In term one:

Kayaking
Students undergo white water kayaking; training in the classroom, the school pool, and local rivers, before heading for a three day feild trip to Murchison -  A kayaking central for New Zealand

Risk management
Students will apply knowledge learnt in the classroom to kayaking trips to manage their own safety and the safety of others, all overseen by a qualified instructor.

First aid
First aid will covered to an industry standard for students to have access to a wide range of opportunities when they graduate from GBHS.
